The airport of Santorini was originally built in 1976, boasting the traditional Cycladic architectural style. In 2017, a renovation project was initiated to enhance its facilities and services.
Situated on the eastern side of the island, specifically in the Monolithos area, the airport is located approximately 6 kilometers southeast of the island's capital, Fira, and at an equal distance from Athinios, the primary ferry port connecting Santorini to numerous Greek islands. Traveling to and from Santorini International Airport is remarkably convenient, with most locations on the island accessible by car within just 10 to 20 minutes.
While Santorini International Airport primarily accommodates domestic flights, it also caters to international direct flights from European countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Moreover, the airport is open to private jets, helicopters, smaller aircrafts, and charter flights, both from within Greece and abroad.
For travelers seeking transportation options to and from the airport, Santorini offers several choices. During the summer season, public bus routes, operated by KTEL, provide regular rides to various destinations on the island, while passengers can purchase their tickets directly from the driver. The airport's bus station is conveniently located between the arrivals and departures terminals, with hourly departures starting at around 05:00 am and finishing at 20:00. To access other locations, including the port, travelers must purchase a new ticket in Fira. Keep in mind that public buses may occasionally experience delays, but they do offer luggage storage facilities.
An alternative convenient option is taking a taxi or booking a transfer. Taxis are typically available at the airport arrivals gate. However, it's advisable to book a transfer service in advance. This way, you can promptly hop into your reserved taxi, minibus, or private VIP car upon arrival.
If you're interested in renting a car, the airport hosts a few car rental counters on-site. Arranging a car rental in advance is a wise option, offering you the flexibility to choose your desired vehicle and keep it for as long as you need.
For those looking to explore Santorini's tourist destinations and beaches by bus from the airport, here are some key routes:
Should you wish to explore the area surrounding the airport upon your arrival or before your departure, you'll find the villages of Messaria and Karterados at distances of 3 and 4 kilometers, respectively. The nearest beaches, Monolithos and Kamari, await your visit, and a few traditional wineries are also nestled in this magnificent region.
